To be at rest

Psalm 55:6
And I said, oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away and be at rest.

Psalm 55:17
Evening and morning and at noon, I will pray and cry aloud; and he shall hear my voice.

Have you ever heard a dove out in the field? I have and they sound like this...coo coo. It's a restful sound to me. I've seen them fly up and land again in the brush or thicket where they could hide. I'm not sure about the above scripture but I think David was longing to fly away and be at rest. He was hunted and fearful for his life. He was crying out to God for deliverance from his enemies.

David loved the Lord and he daily walked with God as we should. When I don't have my time with God each day, my day doesn't go right. I'm not prepared to meet what the day may bring my way. I, like David, have had days when I wish I could fly away and leave my troubles behind me. I have longed for a place to rest, of peace from the troubles and trials of life. David knew where to go and that was to God. We too can run to God, whose arms are open wide to receive us. God does not leave us, it is we who wonder away and then find ourselves in trouble.

The next time you feel like running away, stop. Look up and cry unto God, who will give you sweet rest.
